Said grew up in a villagein the Morogoro region. His parents were poor and could only afford to put him through primary school and he then started working started working on his grandparents’ farm. He stayed on the farm for some years and then decided to travel to Dar es Salaam to look for work. After what felt like a long time he finally found a job as a security guard. The pay was poor, but he saved up to finally being able to open his own shop.
Five months ago Said finally opened his shop selling charcoal. Despite the hopeful name ‘mti pesa’ – ‘money tree’ - so far prospects are less cheerful and the price of charcoal has already gone up quite considerable, making it difficult to support his family of four.
