ADAM SHOP

Owner: Adam Ali Nutu, 41

Opening hours: 8am – 6pm, 7 days a week

Business: staple food

Adam wanted to be a doctor, but faith had it another way. He was born in Tanzania, but the family moved to Somalia when he was three years old. He got his primary education and started secondary school, but then the civil war started and everything changed. His father died during the war and the family had to flee back to Tanzania. Back in Tanzania he had to take on his father’s role, providing for the family. He started working as poorly paid labour, but eventually managed to save up enough to start his own shop.

He opened his shop, which he runs with his wife, in 2002. It was originally located in a nearby street, but had to be moved due to a road construction. The move proved costly, but he has now been in the new location for two years.
